New rapid test for TB welcomed

first_imgWelcoming the approval of the rapid test, MRC Acting President Dr Ali Dhansay noted that the test also allows for testing for resistance of the organism to one of the frontline TB drugs. Though there have been major improvements in TB care and control, about 1.7-million people worldwide were killed by TB in 2009, with 9.4-million people developing active TB. Reduced prices for 116 countries Major milestone Evidence to date indicates that implementation of the test could result in a three-fold increase in the diagnosis of patients with MDR-TB and a doubling in the number of HIV-associated TB cases diagnosed in areas with high rates of TB and HIV. Roscigno noted that preferential pricing would be granted to 116 low- and middle-income countries where TB is endemic, with additional reductions in price once there was significant volume of demand. 9 December 2010 “It also represents new hope for the millions of people who are at the highest risk of TB and drug-resistant disease. We have the scientific evidence, we have defined the policy, and now we aim to support implementation for impact in countries,” said Raviglione. Testing for resistance The organisation has called for the fully automated NAAT to be rolled out under clearly defined conditions and as part of national plans for TB and MDR-TB care and control. WHO Stop TB Department Director Dr Mario Raviglione said the new test represented a major milestone for global TB diagnosis and care.center_img The WHO is also releasing recommendations and guidelines for countries to incorporate the test in their programmes, including testing protocols to optimise the use and benefits of the new technology in those persons where it is needed most. Endorsement of the fully automated Nucleic Acid Amplification Test (NAAT) by the World Health Organisation (WHO) followed 18 months of rigorous assessment of its field effectiveness in the early diagnosis of TB. Policy and operational guidance are also being issued based on findings from a series of expert reviews and a global consultation held in Geneva last week, attended by more than 100 representatives from national programmes, development aid agencies and international partners. The South African Medical Research Council (MRC) has welcomed the approval of a new rapid test for tuberculosis (TB) that could revolutionise TB care and control. The test provides an accurate diagnosis in about 100 minutes, compared to current tests that take up to three months. Foundation for Innovative and New Diagnostics (FIND) CEO Dr Giorgio Roscigno announced that the foundation had negotiated with the manufacturer, Cepheid, for a 75% reduction in the current market price for countries most affected by TB. See: Using SAinfo material He said, however, that the “gold standard” of TB culture remained, since the new test did not reveal sensitivity to other TB drugs. Its effectiveness has also been tested in cases of Multi-Drug Resistant TB (MDR-TB) and TB complicated by HIV infection, which are more difficult to diagnose. “The new test will certainly increase access to treatment and dramatically decrease treatment time for our patients, especially those with HIV co-infection,” said Dhansay. “We are also pleased that the issue of cost has been factored in. Once the test is implemented, the cost-benefit will have to be evaluated.”last_img read more

Curry would love to captain Team Curry again in 2019

(AP Photo/Chris Pizzello)LOS ANGELES — Stephen Curry would love to be an NBA All-Star Game captain again next year, especially since the game will be in his hometown of Charlotte.LeBron James would be OK with someone else taking his place, depending on who the top two vote-getters are, although his draft prowess led to Team LeBron beating Team Stephen 148-145 Sunday night .ADVERTISEMENT View comments Typhoon Kammuri accelerates, gains strength en route to PH Sports venues to be ready in time for SEA Games PLAY LIST 00:59Sports venues to be ready in time for SEA Games01:27Filipino athletes get grand send-off ahead of SEA Games00:50Trending Articles01:29Police teams find crossbows, bows in HK university01:35Panelo suggests discounted SEA Games tickets for students02:49Robredo: True leaders perform well despite having ‘uninspiring’ boss02:42PH underwater hockey team aims to make waves in SEA Games01:44Philippines marks anniversary of massacre with calls for justice01:19Fire erupts in Barangay Tatalon in Quezon City Streaking Jazz make sweet music coming out of All-Star break AFP official booed out of forum “I know who I like watching and I had a draft board. I had a process,” James said. “Some of it went according to plan. A couple of them fell through, but I was satisfied and happy with the guys that I got.”James’ original roster was dramatically altered by injuries to Cousins, John Wall, Kristaps Porzingis and Kevin Love, who all missed the game.“Even with the four guys that got injured we were able to get four new guys that came in and played well for us.”James was named the game’s MVP after making the go-ahead, finger-roll layup with 34.5 seconds left and scoring a game-high 29 points.Where did he hide his draft board?ADVERTISEMENT Globe Business launches leading cloud-enabled and hardware-agnostic conferencing platform in PH Slow and steady hope for near-extinct Bangladesh tortoises 2 ‘newbie’ drug pushers fall in Lucena sting Brace for potentially devastating typhoon approaching PH – NDRRMC MOST READ Read Next NEXT BLOCK ASIA 2.0 introduces GURUS AWARDS to recognize and reward industry influencers “Ain’t none of your business. It was kind of cool to see both teams come together as me and LeBron were picking. So that part, that vibe of the format and having two guys select from your peers will be a fun show as it unfolds year after year.”The All-Star draft led to interesting dynamics on court.Curry chose his Golden State teammates Klay Thompson and Draymond Green, but the trio had to play against Durant. James also chose Oklahoma City duo Westbrook and Paul George to play along with Kyrie Irving, who forced a trade away from James in Cleveland just last summer.Irving and James had no obvious friction, even laughing and joking on the bench. Neither did Durant and Westbrook, who broke up in 2016 when Durant left Oklahoma City for Golden State.Durant helped James smother Curry in the final seconds to prevent him from getting off a potential tying shot. And then there was Toronto’s Dwane Casey coaching Team LeBron against Raptors star DeRozan.“I think that having the captains and selecting the guys and being able to mix them up gave it a more authentic feel of kind of what us players want to be part of in an All-Star Game,” Irving said.“It’s great to play with guys in your conference, East-West. But when you get a chance to have Russell Westbrook, Paul George, and you know they’re teammates already, and then you mix them with myself and Kemba (Walker), and LeBron, and you could see the mix and it just worked.” And there’s a definite appetite for the NBA to televise the captains’ draft rather than conduct it clandestinely like it was this year.“Televise it,” said DeMar DeRozan of Team Stephen. “Give the people what they want to see. I think everybody wants to see it. At the end of the day, every single person that gets picked, you are an All-Star, so it doesn’t matter where you really go, so I think televise it.”FEATURED STORIESSPORTSWATCH: Drones light up sky in final leg of SEA Games torch runSPORTSLillard, Anthony lead Blazers over ThunderSPORTSMalditas save PH from shutoutPlayers raved about the new format of having captains draft the teams rather than the traditional format of East vs. West. And James finally revealed his draft order: Kevin Durant, Anthony Davis, his former Cleveland teammate Kyrie Irving and DeMarcus Cousins, who missed the game due to a season-ending injury.
