Risk managing tennis integrity

first_img17th October 2019 | By Josephine Watson Subscribe to the iGaming newsletter Risk managing tennis integrity Email Address David Lampitt is managing director sports partnerships at Sportradar. Initially joining the Board of Sportradar in August 2012 in a non-executive capacity, David has over 15 years of in-depth experience of working in the sports industry at senior levels.Having previously worked as head of integrity at the FA, since 2013, he has worked on the senior management team at Sportradar, with responsibility for the company’s strategic approach on key topics such as the development of the data market.Proving yourself as trustworthy and credible in the sports betting market is crucial, especially in a competitive environment and with tightening regulations. When it comes to managing risk and integrity, a single bookmaker may face an uphill battle. To be able to do so requires cutting-edge technology, fast and accurate data and global industry expertise. Together, this will not only support a sportsbook’s commercial viability but also help manage risk and mitigate any betting-related integrity threats. This is where David Lampitt, managing director sports partnerships at Sportradar, says the company’s range of data-based and technologically advanced services can assist.“We collect data from over 400,000 sporting events every year. We use a combination of the latest innovation, include machine learning and AI, with our human expertise to monitor, analyse and make meaning out of this data for our clients across the world. Being able to distribute that data very quickly in real-time and use it to underpin our products and services in a way that benefits and serves our partners and clients is the foundation of our business,” Lampitt says.Sportradar uses data to increase engagement and manage risk and integrity for the benefit of the industry as a whole: “Managing risk and integrity is, and always has been, a key area of focus for Sportradar. Obviously, this is a key facet of a successful marketplace that affects all industry stakeholders, and importantly is an area where bookmakers and the sports themselves are fully aligned in wanting the same outcome – a clean sport and a clean betting market,” Lampitt adds. Tennis as a case studyTennis is now recognised as being consistently amongst the top three global sports for betting. Lampitt says this is due to the high number of matches played across the world. Additionally, he believes this is also driven by the way that the structure of the sport lends itself as a betting product, with points, games, sets and matches allowing fans to bet on many individual aspects throughout a match. As such, Lampitt feels the skill of managing risk and trading in tennis becomes a lot more important, given the weight of money that is placed on live in-play events versus pre-match.“Knowing and understanding exactly how to manage risk on the bookmaking side is important as it can provide a real competitive advantage as well as a safeguard,” Lampitt says.Sportradar’s Managed Trading Services (MTS) and Integrity Services work to help bookmakers and the sports themselves to manage this risk and identify problems early.Lampitt explains: “MTS looks after over 150 bookmakers with a dedicated team that has visibility over multiple sportsbooks across the global market on a 24/7 basis.“Our expertise in trading and risk management across this global system serves a dual purpose – helping bookmakers deliver more efficient pricing to drive better results and creating a level of co-ordinated oversight to identify any suspicious activity at the earliest possible opportunity. Amongst our academically-backed experienced analysts are experts who know tennis and are therefore better able to identify suspicious activity on a match that others may miss.“As the wider betting market continues to grow, tennis’ place in that market will continue to be significant. From a data perspective, the main markets and betting opportunities are now well-established, but what I think becomes interesting now is using the deeper data and analytics to elevate the narrative around the sport, creating predictive models that incorporate different elements of gameplay, such as shifting momentum, driving fan insight and engagement, opening up opportunities for new ways of reaching fans and enabling them to interact with the sporting contest.” The future of data in tennisIn light of last year’s reports, findings and recommendations from the Independent Review Panel (IRP), Lampitt also commented on how he sees integrity in tennis evolving.Sportradar currently works with the International Tennis Federation (ITF) as its official data partner, and participated actively in the IRP process.“We have been working with the ITF for well over half a decade now. This official relationship has delivered safeguards through the combination of official data feeds and contractual requirements on integrity that are passed through to sportsbooks. Together with the direct support of our integrity services, this enables us to see first-hand how targeted processes and technology can be used to protect the sport and the industry as a whole,” Lampitt says.Lampitt believes that the recent IRP report has helped drive further collaboration between the stakeholders – sportsbooks, data supply companies and the rights holders. This, he says, is key in helping stamp out corruption and is something he hopes will continue to provide ongoing support for the game of tennis.“This was one of the views that we expressed in response to the IRP report with regard to the best ways in which tennis can protect itself from the threats of corruption in the sport. Collaboration is crucial and we continue to work very closely on further enhancing the sport’s approach to integrity protection with the tennis bodies, our own partners in tennis, as well as the Tennis Integrity Unit (TIU) and the new supervisory board that has been put in place as a part of the IRP’s recommendations.” AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to LinkedInLinkedInShare to FacebookFacebookShare to TwitterTwitter Topics: Sports betting Product & technology As one of the most popular sports worldwide for betting, methods to reduce associated integrity risks to tennis have been identified as imperative. iGaming Business speaks to Sportradar to discuss the current landscape Sports bettinglast_img read more

UK racing to go spectator-free

first_img16th March 2020 | By contenteditor The British Horseracing Association (BHA) has announced that scheduled racing events will continue to take place, albeit without spectators and with restrictions on the number of attendees, as a result of the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. The British Horseracing Association (BHA) has announced that scheduled racing events will continue to take place, albeit without spectators and with restrictions on the number of attendees, as a result of the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. This has been agreed by the BHA, the Racecourse Association and the Horsemen’s Group. It will be in place for all races in England, Wales and Scotland, initially until the end of March, starting with meetings at Taunton and Wetherby racetracks from tomorrow (17 March). The BHA explained that it aims to hold race meetings as scheduled wherever possible, but admitted that the situation was very fluid, meaning cancellations were possible. It would make every effort to notify customers and the betting industry at the earliest opportunity, the association added.“Racecourses and racing yards are embedded in their local communities and we are acutely aware of our responsibilities to protect public health,” BHA chief executive Nick Rust explained.“The restrictions we are putting in place to close racing to spectators and limit attendees will reduce demand on public services. We also have a range of measures in place designed in response to the government’s guidance on public health and we will continue to update these as appropriate.”This forms part of a plan to continue horse racing in the most sustainable fashion, while minimising risk to staff and freeing up public services. The BHA will notify the Department for Culture, Media and Sport of its plan today (16 March).“We acknowledge that today’s decision will also impact on local businesses, especially hotels and restaurants, who are struggling at this time,” Rust continued.“We are following the government’s advice to strike a balance between protecting public health and maintaining business activity and will continue to do so.“We thank our customers and staff for their support.”News that British racing is set to continue comes in the wake of almost all other elite sporting events being postponed in the wake of Covid-19.According to updates from operators such as William Hill and GVC Holdings, major events such as the Uefa European Championships are likely to be postponed or pushed back a year. The pair also expect major racing events such as the Grand National and Royal Ascot to be cancelled. Latvia regulator seeks clarity on online licence suspensions

first_img Regions: Europe Baltics Latvia AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to LinkedInLinkedInShare to FacebookFacebookShare to TwitterTwitter Latvia regulator seeks clarity on online licence suspensions 24th March 2020 | By Daniel O’Boyle Tags: Online Gambling Latvia’s gambling regulator has asked for clarity on the status of online gambling following new emergency laws passed by the country’s government to limit the spread of the novel coronavirus (Covid-19).On Sunday (22 March), the country’s president, Egils Levits, signed a bill setting out measures to prevent and manage national threats and consequences of Covid-19 proliferation that was passed by the country’s parliament on 20 March. The law orders all casinos, gambling halls, bingo halls and betting locations in Latvia to close in order to reduce the spread of the virus. The status of online gambling remains unclear, however. The bill calls for a prohibition on gambling and lotteries “except for interactive gambling, numerical lotteries and instant lotteries.”In the next article of the bill, it then says that the Lotteries and Gambling Supervisory Authority “shall suspend all gambling licenses for physical gambling venues,… interactive media and/or via electronic communication services”.Janis Ungurs, director of the legal department of the Lotteries and Gambling Supervisory Authority, told iGB that the Authority awaits legal clarification on the two seemingly contradictory articles of the law, but it is prepared to suspend online licences if the law calls for it.“Inspection orders regarding online licenses will be issued within the next few days, when we receive legal clarification from parliament’s legal office and Ministry of Justice about legal interpretation of these two chapters,” Ungurs said.On 13 March, the Lotteries and Gambling Supervisory Authority announced that it will not receive visitors in person from 13 March this year until 14 April 2020.The outbreak of the virus has already caused casinos around the world to close. Over the weekend, both the UK and Australia’s Prime Ministers ordered the closure of all casinos and betting shops in their countries as part of social distancing measures. Crown ordered to pay AU$22.5m following Bergin Inquiry

Legal & compliance Regions: Oceania Australia The Victoria state authority then launched its own investigation into flagship resort Crown Melbourne’s suitability to have a casino license in that state. 13th May 2021 | By Marese O’Hagan “Crown, through its Executive Chair Helen Coonan, is addressing many of the issues which caused Commissioner Bergin to find that it was unsuitable to hold a casino licence in NSW,” said ILGA chair Philip Crawford.“The Authority has also entered into an agreement with CPH to address issues around its influence and control over the management of Crown.” AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to LinkedInLinkedInShare to FacebookFacebookShare to TwitterTwitter In addition, it must cease all international junket operations, which the operator says it has already done. Subscribe to the iGaming newsletter While it said that Crown was “unsuitable” to operate the casino as is, it added that it may be suitable after undergoing changes. The ILGA noted that the business was “making significant progress” already towards being a suitable licensee. Helen Coonan, Crown’s executive chairman, said the ILGA’s recognition of its progress was a positive sign that it would be permitted to operate the Barangaroo casino. Crown Resorts Melbourne has been ordered to pay a total of AUD $22.5m (£12.4m/€14.4m/$17.3m) as part of measures set out by the New South Wales Independent Liquor and Gaming Authority (IGLA). “It’s important to know we are well on track but I have assured the regulator there will be no complacency as we continue to embed the changes to improve our governance and compliance processes across the organisation.”center_img Crown ordered to pay AU$22.5m following Bergin Inquiry The Inquiry assessed Crown’s suitability as a licensee for a new resort at Barangaroo in Sydney, and uncovered money laundering and organised crime connections within Crown and its dealings with Asia-based junket operators. Topics: Casino & games Legal & compliance Social responsibility Land-based casino Casino operations Legal The Bergin Inquiry began when the New South Wales ILGA launched a probe into Asian gaming giant Melco Resorts & Entertainment Limited’s purchase of shares in CPH Crown Holdings. “While we recognise we have more work to do, we welcome ILGA’s indication today that Crown’s reform implementation is well-advanced towards suitability to operate gaming at Crown Sydney.” said Helen Coonan, Crown’s executive chairman. In March, private equity group Blackstone put forward a bid to acquire Crown for AUD$8.02bn (£4.47bn/€5.21bn/US$6.19bn). The group later added a clause dissolving the deal if either of Crown’s licenscs were suspended, or if Crown did not receive a New South Wales licence. This week, rival land-based operator Star Entertainment Group proposed a merger with Crown that would create an estimated combined operation amount of AUD$12.00bn (£6.71bn/€7.76bn/US$9.43bn). In order to eradicate potential fraud, Crown must equip all its casino gaming with card technology and not accept cash. Tags: Crown Resorts Crown Melbourne Email Address Crown must pay $12.5m towards the inquiry itself, and also pay an annual Casino Supervisory Levy of $5.0m in both FY2021 and FY2022, after the regulator found Crown “unsuitable” to operate a casino in the Barangaroo district of Sydney in February. The operator may pay a further levy in FY2023, but this is “subject to further consultation”. Crown chief executive Ken Barton stepped down after the findings of the Inquiry were released in February. Further senior Crown executives and directors also resigned as a result.last_img read more
