United manager hails fans and second half performance in Manchester derby win

first_imgLouis Van Gaal hailed Manchester United’s 4-2 win over derby rivals Manchester City as the best he has seen at Old Trafford in his tenure as manager.Goals from Ashley Young, Marouane Fellaini, Juan Mata and Chris Smalling helped a commanding Manchester United cruise past an out of form City side and give the Red Devils a four point gap over their noisy neighbours. The United boss had nothing but praise for his side after a dominating second half performance, while he also paid tribute to fans, claiming the result was payback for their continued support throughout his debut season in charge.Asked if it was his side’s best home performance of the season, the Dutchman said: “Yes, I think so, because the result was fantastic.“I am very happy for the fans as I have seen what it means for them. They are always supporting us, even when the results were not so good, so I am very happy for them. The Red Devils have now won their last four league matches – against Tottenham, Liverpool, Aston Villa and Man City – since their FA Cup exit at the hands of Arsenal. And Van Gaal hailed his side’s consistency, with a top-four and Champions League qualification spot now looks within their grasp.“We have made big steps in the last six games but the defeat to Arsenal was very difficult for my team to stand up and maintain our confidence in the philosophy,” the boss said.“But all credit to the players because they have to do it under the expectation of the fans.“We started very badly and we were not the Manchester United we have seen in the last matches.“I don’t know why we were nervous but we could not get pressure on the ball in the beginning, but then we scored and from that moment there was more confidence in my team.“We started to develop our pace and game plan and the second half was much better than the first half, and until the moment Michael goes off the pitch we were fantastic.”last_img
