Gunmen kill former head of Brazil extortion ring

first_imgSAO PAULO (AP) – Officials say gunmen shot and killed a former police officer who served more than 25 years in prison for leading an extermination group that killed at least 50 people.Inspector Vicente Legioto tells reporters that two gunmen killed Florisvaldo de Oliveira Wednesday night as he was driving to his home in the town of Pindamonhangaba. Two other men in the car with Oliveira were unhurt.Oliveira was known as Corporal Bruno when he was sentenced to 117 years in jail in the early 1980s. He was found guilty of leading a militia group that extorted protection money from Sao Paulo store owners. He was released 35 days ago for good behavior after serving 27 years of his sentence.
