first_imgSmithfield Foods unveils new sustainable energy platformPosted By: News Deskon: October 17, 2017In: Business, Environment, Food, Industries, Social Responsibility, Social responsibilityPrintEmailSmithfield Foods has announced the launch of Smithfield Renewables, a new platform to unify and accelerate the company’s carbon reduction and renewable energy efforts.The renewables arm will aim to ensure that the meat processing company meets its environmental commitments, including its goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 25% by 2025.Smithfield has also introduced its first senior director of Smithfield Renewables, Kraig Westerbeek, who will oversee greenhouse gas reduction efforts.Westerbeek will lead an advisory committee that will evaluate projects and help direct a company-wide strategy for renewable energy projects across both farms and facilities.At facilities, it will include refrigeration, boiler and other equipment upgrades. On farms, it will consist of projects that convert manure into useful products, from fertiliser to renewable energy sources.“Smithfield has long led the industry in sustainability and its environmental commitments,” said Westerbeek. “Smithfield Renewables will ensure we continue to lead in this arena by further sharpening our focus on programmes that help us reduce our carbon footprint and recycle energy more efficiently.”Kenneth M.
