from Harbhajan Singh (Source: Express photo by Kevin D’Souza) Top News IT WAS not surprising that Sandeep Patil would talk about “losing a few friends” on a day he picked an Indian squad for one last time as chairman of selectors You can’t be responsible even if indirectly for bringing an end to Sachin Tendulkar’s career and expect to remain popular Not in India anyway But in many ways taking gutsy and unpopular calls is the legacy the former India batsman will leave behind as his four-year tenure comes to a close It was the running theme of the Patil era For Patil and his team neither shied away from acknowledging the presence of the elephants in the room nor from belling the cat His tenure would after all also oversee the curtain calls on a number of illustrious carrers – from Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman to Virender Sehwag and Zaheer Khan they all brought their careers to a somewhat premature end at least in popular perception Tendulkar called it a day on that famous afternoon at the Wankhede Stadium on November 16 2013 The Indian Express was the first to report the cricketing megastar’s impending retirement a month earlier On October 10 that year this paper had revealed that Patil in his first year at the helm of national selection had met Tendulkar to discuss his future “Patil told Sachin Tendulkar that after his 200th Test it will only be his form and not his past record that will matter when selectors pick the team for future Tests it is learnt” the report read It went on to further reveal how Patil had explained the scenario to him and his panel’s plans to blood in a lot of youngsters Patil was also said to have made it clear that Tendulkar had outlived his ODI career and that the selectors could not guarantee him a place especially keeping the 2015 World Cup in mind In his last press conference when asked about his role in the timing of Tendulkar’s retirement Patil preferred to side-step the question and went with his version of ‘what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas’ “There are some matters between the selectors and BCCI which should remain confidential and cannot be revealed I am only answerable to BCCI” he said He also didn’t want to pinpoint any decision he’d taken during his stint as having been the toughest pretty much leaving the back story to Tendulkar’s final days as an international cricketer as a mystery The timing of the Tendulkar decision though was significant as India was about to set off on a two-year road trip playing Test series in South Africa New Zealand England Australia and Sri Lanka Their first home Test in the post-Tendulkar era would come only in late 2015 This is not to say that those that replaced Tendulkar & Co in the Test team were Patil’s discoveries But by clearing the deck he did pave the way for the likes of Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane who had been waiting in the wings for quite some time to take over the mantle and cement themselves Tough decisions The tough overseas initiation helped the young men to grow as a team So he can take credit for steering Indian cricket into a new era one that has seen India post creditable series wins in Sri Lanka and West Indies under new captain Kohli Not all of his panel’s bold moves made the front-pages or impacted the sentiments of an entire nation as much as Tendulkar’s decision but were still vital in the changing of the guard Three such decisions in particular stand out It was Patil who set the pecking order in the spin department with R Ashwin taking over the mantle as India’s lead spinner from Harbhajan Singh Even in the pace department Patil & Co were firm in their quest for a younger and fitter pace attack when Zaheer began to struggle with fitness and form The same could be said in the Gautam Gambhir case Incidentally they gave both men a fair chance for a comeback before moving on to the likes of Shikhar Dhawan and more recently KL Rahul “We have taken some bold and tough decisions looking at the future of Indian cricket We are very happy at the end of our te0rm that the team is doing well in all three formats” is how Patil summed up his time In all this the circumstances in which Patil took over the job adds a tinge of irony to the legacy he leaves behind Mohinder Amarnath had been removed as selector allegedly for having demanded for the resignation of MS Dhoni as Test skipper following a 4-0 whitewash in Australia which had mirrored the 4-0 drubbing in England the previous year On Monday Patil made it a point to say that no BCCI official had ever interfered in his decisions or even approached his selection committee with any recommendations He also maintained a low-profile and traveled only once with the team on an overseas assignment India’s recent trip to the Caribbean The fact that the final meeting he chaired was a mere formality with pretty much the entire squad picking themselves is a testament to his tenure What’s more it’s unlikely that his successors will have too many selectorial debates to deal with at least in the early days Even if things do go wrong they won’t have to struggle to find replacements with Patil’s panel having more or less identified the new wave of talent who can step up without much fuss The past was phased out the present was secured and the future was insured-not a bad way to remember a selector For all the latest Sports News became England’s fifth debutant on their Asian sojourn (Source: PTI) Top News “TO SCORE runs and bring control with the ball That’s all I can do if I play” As self-assessments go Liam Dawson probably had just set a new yardstick in the honesty quotient “All I can do” isn’t what you generally expect to hear from a cricketer after all especially right after being picked in the national Test squad-a call-up that had shocked him as much as everyone else-for the first time On Friday he became England’s fifth debutant on their Asian sojourn which started in Bangladesh But unlike the other four Dawson’s debut came without any fanfare or at least any high expectations Even the English media who otherwise aren’t shy of talking up and tagging their relative unknowns with hyperbolic fervour didn’t seem too fussed about the 26-year-old left-arm spinner getting a go in the final Test of the series At most he was dismissed as the latest chapter in England’s new-found penchant to throw their young players into the deep end But in his first outing he pretty much kept his word He scored runs In fact he broke the record for the highest ever score by an English No 9 on debut by remaining unbeaten on 66 It was a knock that began with the right-hander getting smacked on his helmet by a nasty Ishant Sharma bouncer It was or should have been anyway a debilitating blow morale-wise too considering Dawson had ducked and tried to sway his head away from the ball only to be struck head-on like potential roadkill who’d completely misjudged the direction of an oncoming vehicle This was also only the second delivery he faced in Test cricket But he faced 146 more and looked good for many more if not for the rest of his lower-order colleagues getting bowled out It was his half-century and the 108-run stand he shared with Adil Rashid that propelled the visitors to their highest total of the series setting up a decent enough challenge for the high-flying Indians over the next three days Game of attrition It was one of those attrition-themed days that Test cricket throws up ever so often and can be both charming and exasperating in equal measure One where even the ‘knowledgeable’ Chennai crowd couldn’t help themselves from breaking into ‘Dhoni Dhoni’ and ‘CSK CSK’ chants at certain times of the day as Dawson and Rashid went about wearing the Indian bowlers’ down Dawson bats No6 for Hampshire and in the past has been described as a ‘reluctant’ bowler And here he looked very adept and at ease against the Indian spinners both defensively and aggressively and played a huge role in R Ashwin ending up with his worst returns of the series-1/151 in 44 overs If anything his performance was heralded with the same surprise that met his inclusion Haseeb Hameed still all of 18 and only a season-old in first-class cricket came to India with great promise and the awe-inspiring moniker of Baby Boycott A lot had already been chronicled about Keaton Jennings and his background before he was flown in for the Mumbai Test once Hameed was injured Dawson was incidentally the other replacement announced during the one-week break between the third and fourth Tests coming in place of the injured Zafar Ansari But the reaction to his arrival mostly ranged between the “they must be kidding” to “well alright why not” Maybe it didn’t help that he came straight from a stint in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) not what you’ll call ideal preparation for your maiden tryst with Test cricket Perhaps it didn’t help either that Dawson had himself admitted “I find red-ball cricket harder to be honest” as recently as in July during the county season where his returns were a paltry 20 wickets at 4385 Dawson was the outsider It might be a series that England aren’t likely to look back at too fondly once they leave for Christmas But in terms of individual contributions there have more high-points than you would expect from a team which has been outplayed overall A lot was expected of Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow and they have delivered So has Ben Stokes with both bat and ball Alastair Cook’s form might be concerning along with the obvious question marks over his captaincy The positives But funnily enough the biggest positives of the series have come from guys who have just come in and how seamlessly they’ve settled to the challenge Hameed dealt with the conditions like he’s done it all his life Most of the English team hadn’t even met Jennings before his debut But he made sure by the time he was out for the first time in Tests he’d left an impression on both his dressing-room and the opposition In a way that’s been the case with the Indians too Jayant Yadav wasn’t really considered by too many as a certain pick for the Test squad at the start of the season but he’s come in and is now possibly the answer to India’s long-standing search for an all-rounder Parthiv Patel to his credit came in after an eight-year hiatus and played a huge role in India winning the Mohali Test It would be easy for England to just want to drift through the Chennai Test and hope to put the campaign behind them as soon as possible But it would be prudent that they look at this as a one-off an opportunity to build to something A new beginning just like Dawson and the other new-comers have previously in the series At the end of the Dawson was as prudent as ever about his opening act calling his half-century a small milestone “I have done what I do for Hampshire and that’s all I can do” is how he put it Now England will hope that he lives up to the other part of his admission and provides control with the ball They will need it For all the latest Sports News download Indian Express App More Top NewsWritten by Dipti Nagpaul D’souza | Published: August 13
