Best practices for building scalable cloud applications

first_img Maria Thomas says: Share this:TwitterFacebookLinkedInMoreRedditTumblrPinterestWhatsAppSkypePocketTelegram Did you know that the database tier is the biggest bottleneck of any given application? As your database tier demands are always fluctuating, it is not feasible to employ a one-size-fits-all approach when building a scalable cloud application. Let’s take a look at the best practices for architecting your database tier for high availability and resilience:Scaling Up If your enterprise is in the nascent stage of an application, the load on the database is relatively lighter and a smaller instance size can be adequate for both master and slave databases. As and when an enterprise grows, the load increases and the master database needs to be migrated to a bigger instance size for additional power, memory and I/O throughput. For effective management of database requests, complex queries, multiple tables, and additional memory are needed to accelerate the response time. The disk I/O demands of any application can be greatly reduced by keeping the working database contained entirely in memory. The performance gains realized from vertical scaling far outweigh the expenses incurred on instance sizes.Using a database load balancing software that facilitates the migration of the database from a smaller instance size to a larger one without needing any changes to the application even as the traffic escalates will mitigate the expenses of larger instances and minimize downtime.Scaling Out If you have a master database, implementing additional slave databases will work to increase the availability and reliability of apps and facilitate horizontal scaling. Using a proxy mechanism with a database load balancing software will distribute TCP traffic appropriately and direct read and write requests properly. Making the application master/slave aware with access information available to both needs SQL server load balancing that can accommodate variable workloads and distribute all read requests uniformly among available slaves.Database Scaling       As an application’s lifecycle progresses it needs to become more scalable and agile at every a larger number of users will be interacting with it. The resource requirements of every database tier increase with time and this creates the need for a well-planned and implemented database design that facilitates horizontal and vertical scaling of database tier to varying degrees.Database Sharding Sharding involves the partitioning of database tables and placement of these distinct pieces on separate servers. This approach works similar to a proxy server where the reads and writes are dispersed across multiple servers to reduce the load on an individual database server. It is recommended to remove the sharding server and modify the application to make it aware of the implementation so that the app can connect to the appropriate server on the basis of the object that is to be accessed. Sharding facilitates an even distribution of queries and improves throughput. If your app relies on cross-table joins and involves multiple servers, sharding may not serve your purpose efficiently. Why a Load Balancing Software Makes Sense Scaling every tier individually can be downright complex and challenging because the architecture of every application comes with a unique set of advantages and limitations. A load balancing software can best handle peaks and dips in traffic by adding and removing virtual machines accordingly. Scale your database capacity with a load balancer and meet anticipated and unexpected demands efficiently.Since the database tier is the biggest bottleneck in building a scalable application, a load balancer solution that ensures easy deployments across multiple clouds, monitors servers, and evenly distributes traffic to servers that are fully-equipped to handle requests makes perfect sense. Boost your database performance and streamline the job of your app developers with a load balancing solution that automates all your management tasks, integrates new applications, accelerates your response time and ensures better security.Tony Branson is a self-proclaimed tech geek, with a passion for ScaleArc’s disruptive technology innovation in database load balancing. Parasoft: support for microservice-specific protocols and message formats

first_img Continue Reading Previous ST: new SDK makes motor-control design faster and easierNext Best practices for safer systems Parasoft released new versions of its functional solutions for microservices. Parasoft SOAtest, an API/web/mobile/database testing solution, now provides a simplified approach to testing microservices, with new workflows and protocol support. Parasoft Virtualize, a service virtualization solution, has been bolstered with new technology to help isolate individual components and stabilize test environments. As pioneers in the software testing space, Parasoft continues to innovate, and when it comes to microservice testing, Parasoft is making it easier to ensure reliable, high-quality software by providing teams with an intuitive approach to defining and executing complete test scenarios. The shift toward microservices has brought great promise to the development and testing worlds by increasing speed, flexibility, and scalability. Realizing these benefits is essential to organizations that are looking to get ahead in today’s face-paced world of software development, so effectively adopting microservices requires an effective testing solution, along with a scalable testing strategy. One of the key advantages of microservice architectures is the ability to develop, deploy, and upgrade services individually. But this essential benefit also introduces a series of new testing challenges, such as understanding how to isolate each component for testing while still collaborating with the team as a whole.Recognized as one of the most important protocols for microservices, Parasoft SOAtest now supports Kafka for both initiating (push) and listening to (pull) events. This supplements support for existing microservice specific protocols, RabbitMQ, protobuff, HTTP, REST, and more.Teams can now easily integrate API testing as part of existing CI/CD processes using the new highly-deployable SOAtest executable, which can be deployed on-demand as a step in CI builds, enabling teams to perform test execution in disposable environments as a part of the accelerated delivery process. With a new workflow to simplify the endpoint discovery process, Parasoft Virtualize teams can now more efficiently simulate services in a federated or sandbox team structure without having to disrupt core system configuration.Using the Parasoft Continuous Testing Platform, teams can visualize their microservices environment. By enabling users to associate test artifacts with each component, that can be shared across development and test teams, the Continuous Testing Platform provides a single point of alignment for test configurations.Share this:TwitterFacebookLinkedInMoreRedditTumblrPinterestWhatsAppSkypePocketTelegram Tags: Tools & Software last_img read more

Neymar will have two players man-marking him, says Costa Rica coach

first_imgCosta Rica will not take the Switzerland route against Neymar and Brazil.Coach Oscar Ramirez has declared that Costa Rica have their own strategy to stop Neymar from wrecking havoc against them at Saint Petersburg on Friday but they will not attempt to foul him out of the game.Neymar became the most fouled player in the World Cup in the last 20 years during Brazil’s 1-1 draw against Switzerland. Post that match, Neymar had trouble training and even had a sore ankle but brushed aside concerns over his match fitness.During the 2014 World Cup, Neymar’s tournament ended prematurely when Colombia’s Zuniga fouled him such that the Brazilian superstar fractures a vertebra.2018 FIFA WORLD CUP: FULL COVERAGECosta Rica, instead, want to go for man-marking.”Neymar is a very skilled player and it’s true that people have tried to stop him a little aggressively,” Ramirez told reporters on the eve of the match. “We have our own strategy and we will see what happens.”Maybe we will cover him by two men. But of course we don’t want to see any sort of offences against him or any unfair attacks against him. The players know what to do.”FIFA WORLD CUP: FIXTURES | POINTS TABLEThe 53-year-old announced his starting lineup at his pre-match news conference, revealing he would make one change to the side that were beaten by Serbia, with Bryan Oviedo coming in at left back in place of Francisco Calvo.Ramirez also called for Costa Rica’s fans to keep faith with the team, saying that reaching the quarter-finals in Brazil four years ago had raised expectations to such an extent that pressure was being piled on his players.advertisementalso read – World Cup 2018: Neymar returns to practice ahead of Costa Rica match”We know our country very well and people in our country don’t like losing,” he added. “Whenever we defend our colours and our shirt we want to win. Sometimes we are a little self-destructive I fear.”Reports have emerged of splits in the dressing room and a falling out between players but Ramirez said his team were all pulling in the same direction. Also read – World Cup 2018: Lackluster Brazil held to 1-1 draw by Switzerland”Certain information has been published and supposedly they come from inside the team, but I wouldn’t say so,” he added.”It’s true that some players are closer to some others, but they are not different groups, there are no problems within the team. I haven’t had to intervene at all, there were no clashes.”Also read – World Cup 2018: Kolarov fires Serbia to crucial win over Costa RicaSkipper Bryan Ruiz said Costa Rica were motivated at the thought of facing five-time world champions Brazil and were mentally prepared for the task ahead.”It’s very motivating to be able to play against Brazil during a World Cup,” he added. “Both teams are fighting to qualify for the next stage so I’m sure it’s going to be a very intense game.”We have prepared very well physically and tactically, so we will have to use that in tomorrow’s game, as well as our psychological strength.”(With Reuters inputs)last_img read more

Brazil’s Paulinho reveals Lionel Messi’s role in his transfer to Barcelona

first_imgBrazilian midfielder Paulinho has seen his fortunes make a massive turnaround in the past one or one and a half years. From playing in the Chinese Super League far away from his home, he is now at one of the biggest clubs in the world, featuring alongside one of the best players of all time. And to think of the fact that 12 months ago this entire turnaround was nowhere in the picture, is remarkable.During the prime of his career, Paulinho was playing at Guangzhou Evergrande in the Chinese Super League after having made a move to Asia from a difficult spell with Tottenham Hotspur.FULL FOOTBALL COVERAGEBut during Brazil’s friendly against Argentina in Melbourne, Messi made a stunning offer to him.”All of a sudden, Messi walks straight up to me, looks me in the eye, and says, ‘So… are we going to Barcelona or not?’,” 29-year-old recalled this week on www.theplayerstribune.com.”I thought maybe he was joking, like he was trying to mess with my head or something. But we were just playing a friendly… so maybe not?”Also read – FIFA World Cup 2018: Who plays who in the quarter-finalsIndeed, a few months later, Paulinho was on his way to Barcelona and in his first year at the club, he would go on to win the La Liga and the Copa del Rey further securing his spot in the Brazilian national team.If Messi is somewhere responsible for his move to Barcelona, it is Brazil’s coach Tite who resurrected his career from the dark.advertisementHard running and aggressive, Paulinho has played every game for the Selecao in Russia as Brazil have established themselves as favourites for a sixth world title heading into Friday’s quarter-final against Belgium in Kazan. An artisan box-to-box operator among the artists of the Brazil team, Paulinho has a knack of being in the right place at the right time, as he showed when he latched onto Philippe Coutinho’s through ball to score against Serbia.”One person who always believed in me was Tite,” Paulinho added.”I get emotional when I speak about Tite, because we are connected in a way that is about more than football.”There have been other dark days in Paulinho’s career – he almost quit the game as a teenager after being racially abused while playing in Lithuania and he suffered from depression when he was dropped at Spurs. The premature birth of his twin son and daughter at the end of last year has helped to put his footballing woes in perspective, however.”Football is full of ups and downs. It’s unpredictable. Going from China to Barcelona is incredible, but it’s not a miracle,” he said.”A miracle is when you come home from football, and no matter what the result was that day, your children look up at you, and their eyes say, ‘Ola, Papai’.”(With Reuters inputs)last_img read more

Bindra says more high-performance centres on anvil

first_imgNew Delhi, July 15 (PTI) Seeking to bridge the gulf between the advanced technology the world uses and the ones accessible to Indian athletes, Olympic champion Abhinav Bindra plans to set up more high-performance and rehab centres across the country. “I have plans to scale up. A few of our centres are doing well. I have identified that the best centre currently is the one in Mohali. Things are coming up, I do have plans to open more centres across the country, and I am looking for like-minded individuals to partner with,” Bindra said on the sidelines of an event in the capital. The 35-year-old remains India’s only individual gold medallist in the Olympics. Since retiring from shooting, Bindra has set up what is arguably one of India’s top-notch high performance and rehab centres at Mohali and Delhi. “Unfortunately in India those facilities were absolutely not available, they were not available for sport, they were also not available for normal rehab, neurological rehab, or preventive health care. “I had access to this doctor in Munich, a very famous sports medicine doctor, who has been associated with football teams, Bolt etc. etc. He has this great setup, a lot of technology that he uses for rehabilitation for not just athletes but normal people also have access.” As an elite athlete, Bindra spent two decades visiting sports science centres across the world and worked with the world’s top sports medicine experts to improve performance or recover from injury. “And that’s what I did, I had my first centre in Mohali, I have a centre now in Delhi and my third centre is my biggest, spread across 10000 square feet for athletes.advertisement “It’s the philanthropy that I do, I run it through my foundation and all elite athletes, all upcoming athletes have free access to the best of facilities in terms of high performance, rehab, prevent injuries. It’s a very interesting, unique journey I have undertaken.” Besides helping elite as well as upcoming athletes to harness their skills, Bindra is convinced that sports science and technology can help normal people recover from injury or surgery. “I think hospitals and health care institutes are generally more focussed on critical care because that’s where the economics lies and I think transitional health care is something which has missed out. “Unfortunately, after care is not available in this country and that’s where I am trying to bring a change in the system. People deserves the best, people deserves to be healthy.” Bindra is known as much for his attention to detail as he is for his perseverance and persistence. “Sport in India needs to grow. We have so much talent, it’s unbelievable, but all that talent needs nurturing, infrastructure, and all that talent requires the edge that is needed to go out there and win an Olympic gold medal. “The world is so advanced, technology plays such an important role. The west is just paying attention to that one percent detail because that one percent detail is going to be the difference between winning a gold medal in the Olympics and finishing 15th. “I am trying to work on that one percent and making that accessible.” PTI AH AHAHlast_img read more

Ajmer: Mayo, police tread cautiously over sodomy charges

first_imgPolice is treading cautiously over allegations of sodomy during ragging at Mayo College in Ajmer.A source in the police said victim’s medical examination has not revealed any injury or evidence of sodomy.Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police, Ajmer Range, Bijju Joseph said police has been looking for corroborative evidence. While sources in police and Mayo board have refused to comment saying there seems to be no evidence of sodomy, but it could be ragging and molestation.A student of Class 11 had alleged that he was sodomised by six of his seniors. Victim’s father, who held a media conference revealing identity of the school, lodged an FIR. Given the nature of allegations, the principal also informed the police and became co-complainant in the FIR lodged under POCSO last week. The statement of the alleged victim was recorded before the magistrate on August 7.The complaint said that a dozen students barged into his room few times between July 10 and 20, drugged him, forced him to consume alcohol before sodomising him by taking turns. He left the college in the last week of July for home and told his parents that he would not return.Meanwhile, father of the teenager has accused the principal of asking them to take away the alleged victim until police completes its investigations. The parents have said that it is leading to loss of the study and sports activity but the principal is cautious about security of the alleged victim given he has to be in the company of the alleged suspects for most of the time.Father of the alleged victim also revealed child’s identity and accused Mayo of inaction.advertisementHowever, Mayo College issued a statement stating, the school authorities, without any inordinate delay, as soon as the alleged incident came to light, have reported the same to the local investigating authority, in accordance with the law. The said fact is also fortified from the complaint of the child which was addressed to the school authority and the same was forwarded to the investigating agency, without any delay, which is the basis of the investigation. The school authorities are cooperating, in every manner, with the local investigating agency to unearth the truth. The students named by the alleged victim are not accused as yet because police has not filed a chargesheet.last_img read more

Arsenal’s 22-match unbeaten streak ends against Southampton

first_imgA late goal by substitute Charlie Austin gave relegation-threatened Southampton a thrilling 3-2 victory over Arsenal on Sunday in new Austrian manager Ralph Hasenhuettl’s first home game.It was the Londoners’ first defeat in 23 games and meant they lost ground on fourth-placed Chelsea, while Southampton moved out of the bottom three.Danny Ings, back after injury, headed two fine goals in the first half from equally good crosses by Matt Targett and Nathan Redmond. In between, Mkhitaryan drew Arsenal level with a header of his own and early in the second half he scored via a big deflection.Yet in the 85th minute Austin, who had come on for the tiring Ings, headed in a cross by Shane Long.A first win in 13 league games since September 1 sent Southampton above Burnley into 17th place while Arsenal, who had last lost to Chelsea in the Premier League in August, remained fifth in the table.Unai Emery’s team had Laurent Koscielny starting in defence for the first time this season but they were uncertain at the back from the first to last minute against a side that at one stage this season went five league games without scoring.Koscielny was at fault in failing to cut out Targett’s cross from the left and losing Ings, who scored his first headed goal for three years. The visitors briefly looked more composed and drew level when Nacho Monreal cut back a cross for Mkhitaryan to head in, and a minute later Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was only denied by a late interception from Jan Bednarek.advertisementSouthampton went ahead again, however, before the interval. Redmond supplied the chance with a neat chip and once again Ings eluded his marker to score. So Arsenal maintained their dismal record of never having been ahead at halftime in the Premier League this season. As a consequence Emery made one of his regular halftime substitutions in sending on Alexandre Lacazette for wing back Hector Bellerin, and Aubameyang almost equalised within a minute.Mkhitaryan’s second goal was fortunate in the extreme, his shot taking a big deflection off Jannik Vestergaard to leave goalkeeper Alex McCarthy helpless.Long, replacing Redmond, had a goal rightly disallowed for offside but then picked out Austin with a cross that goalkeeper Bernd Leno failed to deal with.”As a club we know the position we’ve put ourselves, and with the squad we’ve got it’s not good enough,” said Ings.”But if we keep showing resilience and hard work we can turn it round. It shows we’re moving in the right direction already.”Arsenal’s Alex Iwobi said his side had not concentrated sufficiently and not defended well enough as a team.”We’re frustrated the unbeaten run is over,” he added.”We had chances to win the game. But we should give ourselves some credit for going on the run.”last_img read more

Chinese GP: Bottas pips Hamilton to pole for 1000th F1 race, Vettel grabs 3rd spot

first_imgValtteri Bottas will start Formula One’s 1,000th world championship race from pole position after leading Mercedes team mate Lewis Hamilton in a front row lockout at the Chinese Grand Prix on Saturday.Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel qualified third, ahead of 21-year-old Monegasque team mate Charles Leclerc who was unable to repeat his Bahrain Grand Prix pole of two weeks ago.Bottas, who won the season opener in Australia and leads defending champion Hamilton by one point in the standings, was the third different driver to take pole this season in three races.”The lap was OK, not completely how I wanted. Luckily it was good enough for pole,” smiled the Finn, who pipped Hamilton by 0.023 seconds after setting a best time of one minute 31.547.”Lewis also managed to improve a lot during the qualifying and it was super-close.”The pole was a first for Bottas since Russia last September and the seventh of his career. It was also his first in China where Mercedes have won five of the last seven races.Hamilton sounded happy just to be on the front row, despite six previous poles in Shanghai, after looking out of sorts in practice.”I didn’t give up, I kept pushing right to the end. Big congratulations to Valtteri, he’s been stellar all weekend and I’ve been struggling and fighting the car,” said the Briton.”To be as close as we are at the end is fantastic. An incredible result for the team. There was a little bit more time left on the table there but that’s cool, I’ll try and get it tomorrow,” added Hamilton.advertisementUNHAPPY VERSTAPPENFerrari had arrived in China as favourites after showing their speed in Bahrain, particularly on the straights, with Leclerc on pole and leading until a loss of engine power in the closing laps. While unable to match the quick-cornering Mercedes cars for overall pace in Shanghai, Vettel hoped to be closer on Sunday thanks to the track’s main straight being more than a kilometre long.”I think there was maybe a little bit more but overall not enough to beat these guys today,” said the 31-year-old German, a four times world champion.”If we get close we could have an advantage in a straight line.”The top 10 positions went two-by-two in team order, with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Pierre Gasly fifth and sixth and ahead of the Renault pair of Daniel Ricciardo and Nico Hulkenberg the Australian just 0.004 ahead of the German. With the field of cars bunching up, Verstappen was unable to cross the line to start his final run before the clock ran down, which prompted a frustrated outburst over the radio from the 21-year-old Dutchman.”I was trying to follow the Ferrari in front of me and trying to overtake him, this time it caught me out and I’m not happy about that,” he said. “It’s annoying because we could have fought for third today.”Everyone in front of me is starting with the same tyres so we’ll see what happens in the race. For sure we’ll try to get a podium.”Haas’s Kevin Magnussen and Romain Grosjean completed the top 10 qualifiers.Kimi Raikkonen, the former Ferrari driver and 2007 world champion, failed to make the final phase of qualifying for the first time since 2016 and will start 13th for Alfa Romeo ahead of McLaren’s Carlos Sainz and Lando Norris.Raikkonen’s Italian team mate Antonio Giovinazzi failed to set a time due to engine problems and starts 19th and last on the grid.Thailand’s Alexander Albon did not take part in qualifying after a crash in final practice left his Toro Rosso mechanics with plenty of work to do. The rookie will start from the pit lane on Sunday.”I am OK. More angry and disappointed than anything else. It was a big one and silly one,” said Albon. “We had a good chance of being in Q3 (the top 10 shootout). We had a good car.”last_img read more

New device can produce electricity from falling snow

first_imgLove snowfall? Except for making people really happy, snowfall now might also generate electricity.Scientists have designed a first-of-its-kind 3D-printed device that can produce electricity from falling snow.Where? The device designed by researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).It is just an inexpensive, small, thin and flexible like a sheet of plastic.”The device can work in remote areas because it provides its own power and does not need batteries,” said UCLA’s Richard Kaner, senior author of the research published in the journal Nano Energy.”It’s a very clever device — a weather station that can tell you how much snow is falling, the direction the snow is falling, and the direction and speed of the wind,” Kaner said in a statement. What is the device called? The device is called snow-based triboelectric nanogenerator, or snow TENG and it generates charge through static electricity, produces energy from the exchange of electrons.Science behind it”Static electricity occurs from the interaction of one material that captures electrons and another that gives up electrons,” according to Kaner.”You separate the charges and create electricity out of essentially nothing,” he said.Snow is positively charged and gives up electrons.Silicone — a synthetic rubber-like material that is composed of silicon atoms and oxygen atoms, combined with carbon, hydrogen and other elements — is negatively charged. When falling snow contacts the surface of silicone, it produces a charge that the device captures, creating electricity.”Snow is already charged, so we thought, why not bring another material with the opposite charge and extract the charge to create electricity” said Maher El-Kady, a UCLA postdoctoral researcher. Wow! What an idea!”While snow likes to give up electrons, the performance of the device depends on the efficiency of the other material at extracting these electrons,” he added.advertisement They tried other materials too! After testing a large number of materials including aluminum foils and Teflon, the researchers found that silicone produces more charge than any other material.Do you know that about 30 per cent of the Earth’s surface is covered by snow each winter, during which time solar panels often fail to operate? So, id this gets functional on a large scale, it will definitely change the way we look at electricity currently. The accumulation of snow reduces the amount of sunlight that reaches the solar array, limiting the panels’ power output and rendering them less effective. The new device could be integrated into solar panels to provide a continuous power supply when it snows. What can the device possibly do?The device can easily be used for monitoring winter sports, such as skiing, to more precisely assess and improve an athlete’s performance when running, walking or jumping, Kaner said.It could usher in a new generation of self-powered wearable devices for tracking athletes and their performances, researchers said. The device can also send signals, indicating whether a person is moving. It can tell when a person is walking, running, jumping or marching, they said. The team used 3D printing to design the device, which has a layer of silicone and an electrode to capture the charge. The researchers believe the device could be produced at the low cost given “the ease of fabrication and the availability of silicone,” Kaner said. Also read: Why is NASA returning astronauts to Moon?Interested in General Knowledge and Current Affairs? Owner Abramovich still passionate about Chelsea, says David Luiz

first_imgChelsea owner Roman Abramovich is still passionate about the Premier League club and tries his best to be involved on a daily basis despite his long-term absence at Stamford Bridge, defender David Luiz has said.Russian billionaire Abramovich ran into problems renewing his British visa last year amid tensions between the two countries and he has not been seen at Chelsea’s matches this season.British media reports indicated Abramovich had grown weary and even looked to sell the club but Luiz said the 52-year-old had not lost his hunger for success after speaking with him prior to renewing his Chelsea contract last week.”I had the opportunity to talk with him last week to decide my future,” Luiz told The Daily Mail. “He loves the club and everything that is inside the club, not just the people. He wants to win everything, he wants to do more.”It’s difficult for him, he has been away but his heart is here. He tries to be involved every single day. He’s still really passionate for the club. He has the same hunger, thinking about winning. He doesn’t want to lose energy.”He’s the one who built Chelsea – everything at Chelsea changed because of him. The results speak for themselves, 15 trophies in 15 years.”Chelsea finished third under Maurizio Sarri to return to the Champions League and Luiz said the London club has exceeded pre-season expectations as they look to finish the campaign with a Europa League trophy when they face Arsenal in Baku on May 29.advertisement”We did amazing, especially with the first year for a new coach,” Luiz said. “Nobody expected Chelsea to finish third. Everybody thought we were going to be out of the Champions League.”We’re fighting for the Europa League and we lost the League Cup on penalties, a competition where we beat Liverpool and Tottenham and were the better side against Manchester City in the final.”Also Read | Antoine Griezmann confirms Atletico Madrid exit amid rumours of Barcelona moveAlso Read | Brazilian court upholds seizure of Ronaldinho’s passportAlso Seelast_img read more

India sweep mixed team titles to conclude best ever ISSF WC performance

first_imgIndia produced their best ever show at the ISSF World Cup after sweeping both the mixed team titles on Thursday for a total tally of five gold medals in Munich, Germany.India topped the medals tally with five gold and a silver, while second placed China bagged nine medals — two gold, two silver and five bronze medals.India gold medallists included Apurvi Chandela (10m Air Rifle Women), Rahi Sarnobat (25m Pistol Women) and Saurabh Chaudhary (10m Air Pistol Men), besides the Mixed Team titles won on the last day.The pair of Anjum Moudgil and Divyansh Singh Panwar first won the 10m Air Rifle mixed team gold, even as the teenage pair of Manu Bhaker and Saurabh Chaudhary backed them up with the 10m Air Pistol mixed team title, rounding off a dominating show by the Indian squad at the year’s third International Shooting Sport Federation world cup stage. In fact, in the Mixed Air Rifle, it was an all India gold medal match and Apurvi Chandela and Deepak Kumar landed the country its lone silver, going down to their compatriots 2-16.Manu and Saurabh, in the Air Pistol finals, found it a bit tough against the experienced Ukranian pair of Olena Kostevych and Oleh Omelchuk but they won 17-9 in the end.Anjum and Divyansh shot 629.1 in round one of their relay to qualify as the fourth team, 0.1 points ahead of Apurvi and Deepak, who made it through as fifth having finished second in their individual relay earlier.advertisementThe gold medallists again bettered their countrymates in round two, shooting a combined 631.9 to top the eight-team standings. Apurvi and Deepak followed them with an effort of 630.2, setting up an all India gold medal match-up.Meanwhile, the Belarussian pair of Maria Martynova and Ilia Charheika won a thrilling bronze medal match against the Austrian pair of Olivia Hofmann and Alexander Schmirl 16-14. The Belarussians were down 0-10 at one stage before staging a remarkable comeback. In the gold medal match, Anjum and Divyansh were dominant with Apurvi and Deepak winning just the first two-shot series. In the Air Pistol competition, Manu and Saurabh also made their intentions clear from round one itself, topping the 76-team field with a score of 586 and then doing an encore in round two with an even better 591.World record holder Saurabh shot a 100 in his last series. In the gold medal match, against a team, which had a former Olympic champion in Olena, Manu and Saurabh kept ahead of the game from the onset, maintaining a four-point gap throughout. There was a moment when the Ukranians picked up three out six points for a semblance of a fight back, but solid shooting by the young Indian pair, meant they had no chance. The event format consisted of a first qualification round of three series of 20-shots each with each team member allocated 10-shots per series. The top eight teams would then move to a second qualification round and have another round in the same format. The top two teams would then qualify for the gold medal match while the third and fourth best teams would compete for the bronze medal. In the match-ups, each member would get a single shot and the higher aggregate score was allotted two points. This series would continue and the first to 16-points was declared the winner. Also Read | Munich World Cup: Manu Bhaker secures Olympic quota in shootingAlso Read | ISSF Shooting World Cup: Saurabh Chaudhary smashes world record to put India on topAlso Seelast_img read more

World Cup 2019: Brendon McCullum makes match-by-match prediction. Mark Waugh disagrees about India chances

first_imgWhile every other former cricketer picked their favourites for the World Cup 2019, former New Zealand skipper Brendon McCullum took out time to give a detailed, match-by-match prediction for all the 10 teams in the tournament. The New Zealand power-hitter, who guided his team to the 2015 World Cup final, believes England and India will carve out their ways to semi-final easily with 8 wins each, while Australia will join the two with 6 wins.McCullum predicted the race for the last knockout spot will be between New Zealand, West Indies, South Africa and Pakistan but wished for his home country to be favoured by luck.Former Australian player Mark Waugh looked impressed with McCullum’s analysis but disagreed with him on India’s chances of making to the last four.Mark Waugh felt India will struggle to qualify for the semi-finals based on the team’s weak middle order and over dependency on skipper Virat Kohli and fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah. While many Indian fans might not be happy with Waugh’s predictions but the Aussies’ worry regarding India’s middle-order stands true, given that the Indian side had not discovered their No. 4 batsman until their warm-up match against Bangladesh.Good summary. IMO I think England and Aust certain semi finalists. India not so sure but probably sneak in.Preparation a little suspect and batting lineup uncertain in the middle order. Big reliance on Kohli and Bumrah. NZ slightly ahead of WI and Sth Africa for 4th.Mark Waugh (@juniorwaugh349) May 31, 2019India have gone through a dozen or so players in their search for an ideal No. 4 batsman since the 2015 World Cup, but their search looked to come to an end only when KL Rahul, playing at No. 4 position, fired 108 runs with bat in the recent World Cup 2019 warm-up game against Bangladesh.advertisementIt will be interesting to see, if India continue to bat Rahul at the same spot when they begin their World Cup campaign against South Africa on June 5.Also Read | World Cup 2019: I am a fast bowler, not medium pacer, says annoyed RussellAlso Read | World Cup 2019: IPL stint was important for returning Smith and Warner, says FinchAlso Seelast_img read more

World Cup 2019: MS Dhoni changes wicketkeeping gloves, no army crest this time

first_imgMS Dhoni wore a different pair of wicketkeeping gloves against Australia at The Oval after the ICC denied him permission to sport the army insignia on his gloves in World Cup 2019.A huge controversy had erupted after the ICC asked BCCI to get MS Dhoni to remove the army crest from his gloves. Fans in India were furious and the BCCI even wrote a letter to the world governing body seeking permission for MS Dhoni to continue wearing his gloves with the Balidan badge on them. However, the ICC said Dhoni could not be allowed to don the army badge on his gloves and the BCCI decided not to contest the ruling.MS Dhoni was seen sporting the Balidan badge during India’s World Cup 2019 opener against South Africa in Southampton on June 5. 4 days later, he wore a different pair of gloves without the Balidan badge.India cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar said rules are in place because they are meant to be followed. He said it did not matter what MS Dhoni wore on his gloves as long as he continued to effect those quick stumpings and take those brilliant catches.Former India football captain Baichung Bhutia said MS Dhoni’s gesture was heartwarming but he said ICC rules needed to be followed. However, S Sreesanth reckoned the ICC should apologise to India and MS Dhoni for dictating terms to the world’s richest cricketing nation. Also Read | World Cup 2019: Indian fan flaunts Balidaan Badge at The Oval after ICC says no to MS DhoniAlso See:advertisementlast_img read more
