first_imgDecember 10, 2014Thursday evening, at Arizona State University’s Evelyn Smith Music Center, this is what happened: 6 members of the ASU Percussion Ensemble under the direction of Dr. J.B.Smith played 24 tuned Soleri Windbells in concert. [photos and text by Cosanti Foundation President Jeff Stein]The piece was “Bell Air,” a brand new composition by the German composer Matthias Kaul, brisk, precise, energetic, a little meditative…terrific.  The bells had been selected at Cosanti several weeks earlier with the help of an iPhone app that showed the specific tone of each bell [see ArcoNews report from 11/12/2014]. As part of the program conductor J.B.Smith announced the source of the bells – Cosanti – and suggested the audience should visit there before the holidays. Good advice!last_img
